Guide / Fields
Fields and their types
A field is a named, typed value. Add it to a collection from the catalog or create a new one.
In Corexar a field is called a characteristic: a name, a type and, for choices, a list of options. Characteristics live in a catalog, so “Status” or “Year” is defined once and can be attached to as many collections as you like. What you attach to a collection is its schema.
Types
| Type | Use it for |
|---|---|
| Text, Long text | Names, notes, anything written. Long text is a multi-line box. |
| Rich text | Descriptions with headings, lists, links, tables and pictures. |
| Number, Rating | Counts, years, pages; a rating is shown as stars. Both can be stepped with + and −. |
| Yes / No | Flags such as “owned” or “read”. |
| Date | Release dates, due dates, calibration dates. |
| Single select, Multi select | A fixed list of options: a status, a format, genres. |
| Tags | Free-form labels, typed as you go. |
| Image, File | A picture or a file as the value of a field. |
| Composite | Several named sub-values in one field, such as an evaluation with a score, a reviewer and notes. |
Add a field
- Open the collection, go to Schema and press + Add field.
- From catalog lists fields that already exist, with how many collections use them. Pick one and press Attach.
- Or open New characteristic: give it a name, choose Single value or Composite, the scope (shared or personal), the type and, for choices, the options separated by commas.
- Tick “Share in the global catalog” if other collections and people should be able to reuse it, and “Required in this project” if every entry must have a value. Press Create & attach.
Smart filters and removing
Each row of the schema has a Smart filter checkbox. Ticked, the field appears as a filter above the entries (see Browse, search and filter). Remove detaches the field from this collection; the values already stored stay in the database but are no longer shown.
Tip. Attaching, editing and removing fields needs the “Edit collections & schema” permission.
